The second edition of our “Last Friday Art Show” is in full effect! We will be showcasing artwork by: Duncan Robertson, Joshua Graydon, Ryan Gibbons, and hand crafted jewelry by Laci and Lucy.
I ran across this video in youtube land this morning — it’s actually the first collaboration between the Cheats Movement Blog and West Coast Kix. Ben shares some great insight into WCK, thoughts on business, and RVA. Check it out:
The entire West Coast Kix team got together yesterday to do some special brainstorming. The mission is to find community service projects that really define our team, the store, and our community. We want (need) your input — please comment on this post, facebook, and twitter on community service projects that you think will define West Coast Kix.
This is Cheats here for West Coast Kix. Since I have been covering RVA hip hop shows, I have seen a number of streetwear brands on the scene. Some brands have stepped their games up while other have taken a step back (a few have faded away completely). The lesson that I have learned about the streetwear industry is that it is a really hard business. The dreams of Team Crisp in the HBO Show, How To Make It In America are just that…made for TV (RIP Crisp). In reality, you could be “Rocawear on top of the world” today and “Rocawear global sales dropped 500 million in January” tomorrow. So in order to “make it” you have to have vision, work ethic, quality products, a business plan, and a lot of luck.
A clothing brand that seems to be developing those components is YFD Clothing. Co-founded by Daquan and Donte’ Williams in 2008, Young, Fly & Dangerous seems to be everywhere these days, including West Coast Kix. Their clothing is inspired by skateboarding, surf, punk, sneaker heads, and hip-hop cultures and is comprised of graphic t-shirts, crewnecks, button ups, polo’s, headwear, and accessories. Come by the store and check out the work of these RVA entrepreneurs or visit YFD Clothing online.
Local spotlight is a new series that I’m doing for WCK — if you are a local brand with your products at WCK. Hit me up at: TheCheatsMovement@gmail.com for a spotlight.
I know some of you are sweating Valentine’s Day – fear not. When in doubt, just go with a gift card. Swing by the store before it’s too late and pick one up.
WCK owner Ben and blogger Cheats helped out Natural Talent Clothing for their promo campaign. Natural Talent is a up and coming clothing company created by young entrepreneurs right here in RVA.
The new spring line from THE HUNDREDS has arrived. This stuff is dope and going fast so make sure you swing by the store and check it out. Our friends Trevor and Bobby helped us show off the new products.
Trevor is so pumped about The Hundreds — just look at him.
What’s up WCK Fam – Last weekend, I took The Cheats Movement camera to WRIR’s Party For The Rest of Us. They were celebrating their 7th anniversary in style at the Renaissance Ballroom on Broad Street. The venue was jam packed with a who’s who of Richmonders.
It was an amazing evening. Our team at WCK are so happy that WRIR just celebrated their 7th anniversary. Independent radio only survives through local support – it is encouraging to see that community spirit in action. It is our goal to be a part of that RVA spirit everyday.
